Join us on Sunday, March 16th along the trail at Poole Family Nature Sanctuary for another rendition of our Winter Tree I.D. event! Guided by well-known tree expert, Owen Clarkin, you will learn to identify trees during the winter months by bark, twig, growth characteristics, and other key features.
Registration is free, with a suggested minimum donation of $10 per person to support MMLT’s conservation work. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER.
(Once registered, you’ll receive an email closer to the event date with details such as address, parking, what to wear, etc.)
A few important notes:
- Poole Family Nature Sanctuary is located at 318 Concession 11, south of Carleton Place
- We highly encourage carpooling as parking is limited – on the same side of the road as the trailhead only.
- The trail is 2km, fairly flat with some small slopes to walk up and rocks to step over
- Please check the weather forecast ahead of the event and dress accordingly!
- For hiking in the wintertime with snowy conditions, we always recommend snowshoes and hiking poles
- If you’re registered and cannot attend, please notify us at [email protected] as soon as possible so that we can fill your spot with another interested individual
A little bit about our guides:
Owen Clarkin
Owen has been studying the trees of Eastern Ontario as a dedicated amateur since the age of 4. Since finishing a terminal degree in the natural sciences in 2012, he is more seriously exploring topics in tree identification and ecology from an Eastern Ontario perspective, together with a core group of colleagues. In addition to leading public nature hikes, Owen regularly contributes to local and worldwide plant identification forums on social media.
Eleanor Thomson
Eleanor has completed numerous Baseline Documentation Reports (BDRs) for MMLT, including the BDR for the Poole Family Nature Sanctuary. These reports document the heritage character and condition of a property at the time of its acquisition by MMLT. They include detailed species inventories and the identification of all tree species present on the property. Eleanor continues to support MMLT by leading guided tours throughout the year and completing species inventories.
