On Wednesday, Nov 29, there will be a celebration of Joel Byrne’s wonderful bequest of the Byrne Big Creek Nature Preserve at the Barley Mow in Almonte starting at 7:00 p.m.  Come help us celebrate Joel with haiku, games and fun with friends.  A  cover charge of $10 will help us kick off our fundraising campaign for this property.

Joel Byrne, dear friend, naturalist, feeder of squirrels, chipmunks and birds, and strong supporter of MMLT and the local field naturalist clubs bequeathed his beloved 100 acre Big Creek to MMLT to ensure that it is conserved in perpetuity and continues to be shared with friends and community. Located near McDonalds Corners, this “Paradise” has rich and diverse ecosystems – meadow, fen, hardwood forest.

We have estimated that our annual costs in today’s dollars to pay for taxes, insurance, maintenance, and long-term stewardship of this property forever will be $48,500. MMLT needs your help to raise the funds which will be held in an endowment fund with the Community Foundation of Ottawa.

Through the generosity of Irene’s Pub in Ottawa, every donation made by November 30th will be matched up to $5,000.

If you’re not able to join us on November 29th, we hope that all those who care about the preservation of wilderness in eastern Ontario will consider helping to achieve this goal by visiting the campaign webpage and donating generously to the cause.

With your support, Joel’s 100 acre property will be a haven for wildlife and nature lovers for generations to come.
