You are invited to a special morning touring the Big Creek fen on Thursday, July 12 at 9:00 a.m.

Explore the fen at Byrne Big Creek Nature Preserve with field naturalist, author, and nature photographer Michael Runtz.  The fen at Byrne Big Creek is a special place.  It lies on the shores of the shallow McCullochs Mud Lake, which is an “oxbow” lake formed from what was a wide meander of the Mississippi River.  Unusual animals and plants like Bog Bean and Bog Willow grow on the floating mat of vegetation that defines the fen.  Black Terns have been spotted nesting in the area in past years.

With his infectious enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the natural world, Michael will lead the group to look for birds, insects like dragonflies, as well as sedges, and orchids.  The fen has not yet been explored to record its biodiversity.  What will you discover?!

Entrance is $20 and the number of participants is restricted to twenty-five people to ensure minimum impact on the fen and maximum enjoyment for all.  Please purchase your ticket using the form below and register early to be sure to be one of the lucky twenty-five.
